Our Gamma Cell, type G.C. 220, can irradiate samples that will fit into a cylindrical chamber approximately 15 cm in diameter and 20 cm in height. The Gamma Cell utilizes an annular Co-60 source permanently enclosed within a lead shield, a cylindrical drawer, and a drive mechanism which moves the drawer up or down along the center line of the source. The current dose rate is calculated based on the half-life of Co-60. The cell has a good spatial distribution of gamma field with practically no variation within the chamber.
The sample should fit in the cylindrical chamber and be in a sealed container that can be made out of almost any material. For sterilization of medical instruments a total dose of 25 kGy (2.5 Mrad) is recommended. The lead time will be more than 1 week for a typical sterilization dose at 25 kGy. The service cost depends on the amount for total dosage in addition to $40 operating fee. The cost for a dose of 25 kGy is $175 per irradiation batch starting on April 1, 2021.
Pick up and Drop off are on Mondays and Thursdays, between 9 am and 5 pm. For more information, please contact Cheol-Heon Jeong or 416-978-5932.
